Training from Book 1 – Childcare Through the Eyes of an 18-Month Old

Week 1 – Thurs. Nov 7/2024 – 7-8 p.m. EST
Setting up a toddler classroom to reflect or mimic a home-like setting. This week will focus on making changes to an
existing classroom with respect to play materials to meet needs of movement and schema play,
exploration through cause and effect behaviour, sensory needs, room arrangement, addition of
home-like furnishings, soft lighting, plants, fish, cozy corners, adding beautiful junk, loose
materials.

Week 2 – Mon. Nov 11/2024 – 7-8 p.m. EST
Let’s talk about schema play and loose materials for toddler development. This week will focus on
identifying schematic play with toddlers and how to respond to this need and extend this play to
promote more learning opportunities, as well as discussion on observation and how to integrate these
observations into a program plan.

Week 3 – Tues. Nov 19/2024 – 7-8 p.m. EST
Let’s talk about responding to challenging toddler behaviour such as biting, hitting, pushing,
tantrums, screaming. This week will focus on understanding why these behaviours are happening and
what needs are not being met. What are the children trying to tell you with their
behaviour? We’ll also touch on connecting with parents as partners when dealing with these behaviours.

Week 4- Mon. Nov 25/2024 – 7-8 p.m. EST
Let’s talk separation anxiety when children are first transitioned into your program. This week will focus on
setting up a parent partnership, how to connect with the child during the first weeks of
transition, and what information you will need about the child before coming into the program.
Transition times will also be discussed. Attachment theory will also be explored in addition to
integrating Erikson psychosocial theory of development.
