If you’re an early childhood educator or parent of a toddler interested in learning more about how your child transitions into a childcare environment, this is the book for you.

Childcare Through the Eyes of an 18-Month Old: A self-directed training guide for toddler educators

Hi! My name is Randy, and I am 18 months old. My parents are sending me to a childcare center, and I have no idea what is going to happen to me. Follow me in my adventure into the day-to-day life of a toddler navigating a new world outside of the comforts of his home and parents he loves and feels safe with. How will he react? How will toddler educators respond to him when he has separation anxiety? How will they engage him? What will they say to him when his mom leaves? How will they support his development and learning during his time?

Praise for Childcare Through the Eyes of an 18-Month Old

There are many books written about toddler behaviour, but none from the toddler’s perspective. Cathy’s unique expertise and vantage point allow educators an alternative viewpoint that will inspire them in their own reflective practice. New and seasoned educators alike will benefit from this book. The chapters are an interesting mix of concrete examples and observations coupled with theory. Cathy doesn’t just explain best practices, she provides clear, hands-on strategies that educators can immediately implement in their programs. The worksheets are geared toward

building on an educator’s knowledge and expanding one’s repertoire. Best of all, this is only the first of a series of four books that will take educators and parents on a journey toward better understanding and supporting young children.

— Donna Spreitzer, ECE, BS, MA, executive director, Toronto Community for Better Child Care instructor, Early Childhood Management Certificate Program, George Brown College

This book truly captures excerpts of a young child’s journey as he transitions from a secure home environment to a new and uncertain early learning and care environment. The author introduces concepts such as goodness of fit, positive interactions, sense of belonging, and attachment theories. Parents, guardians, and early childhood educators alike will find meaning and value in this book. It will impact your expectations and responses, provide opportunities for reflection, and help you to pivot to become a sensitive, compassionate, knowledgeable, and responsive adult to young children.

— Sheryl Barton, RECE (executive director of John Ross Robertson Community Child Care Centre, Toronto)
